Hence,astherainslowedat1p.m.,Isetouttocompleteanentireday’scyclinginonewet,muddyafternoon.Thedaysucked.Itwasgrimandgrey,withcloudssolowyoufeltlikeyouweregoingtohityourhead.IwasalreadysoakedthroughwhenIstarted,andthe97.52kilometerstoChungju,NorthChungcheong,wereagrueling,muddyslog.ThesouthernstretchoftheHanisextremelybeautifulcountry,butIpassedmostofitinawetdaze.AwaterskierpassesinfrontofSilleuksa,aBuddhisttempleoutsideYeoju,Gyeonggi,onSept.28.[JIMBULLEY]IarrivedinChungjuinthedark,cold,wetandwithjustenoughtimetoknockbackaconveniencestoreramenbeforeIspenttwohourstryingtowashmyclothesintheshoweranddrythemwithahairdryer.SoendedDay2.ThethirddaywastheoneIhadbeendreadingthemost.HereweleavebehindtheHanRiverandjoinourthirdlegofthetrip,theSaejaeBicyclePath.SaejaeisareferencetotheMungyeongSaejaemountainpass,theonlyplaceinKoreawheretheGreatYeongnamRoad,whichconnectedthenorthwestandsoutheastofKoreaforhundredsofyears,remainsasintactasitwasduringtheJoseonDynasty(1392–1910).Theroutedoesn’tactuallygothroughtheSaejaepass,but,asthenamesuggests,itisallaboutcrossingthemountains.AwoodenbridgeinSuanbo,NorthChungcheong,onSept.29.[JIMBULLEY]IstartedinChungjuwithastopatacafeforcoffee,graduallyclimbing200metersoverthefirst25kilometersbeforeIstoppedatthemountainvillageofSuanboforaPocariSweat.Thencametherealwork.Tocrossthemountainsyouclimbthroughtwopasses,firstascendingsharplytojustshyof400metersabovesealevelandthenquicklylosing150metersofaltitudebeforethebigclimbupto530meters.Thesemaynotsoundlikehugenumbers,buttheyaresteepclimbsandI’dneverreallyseenahillbefore:Likemostcyclists,Iresortedtowalkingthelast100verticalmetersorsoofeachpeak,reachingthetopatmiddayforlunch.TheviewfromthetopofIhwaryeonginNorthChungcheongonSept.29.[JIMBULLEY]WhatfollowsisarapiddescentintoMungyeonginNorthGyeongsang,andImanagedtorollanother35kilometerstofinishthedayat80kilometersinMungyeong’surbanizedJeomchonneighborhood.IescapedthemountainousSaejaeBicyclePathonDay4,finallyreachingtheupperNakdongRiver,althoughnotwithoutafight.Optingtofollowthecross-countrybikeroadsignsinsteadofKakaoMaps,Ifoundmyselfsuddenlyinahilly,wooded,muddysectionthatwasmoreofamountainbikecoursethanaroad.Thisdetourallowedmetopassthe“GraveoftheLoyalCow,”whichmadeitsomewhatworthit,butitwasagoodhourbeforeIrejoinedwhatKakaothoughtwasthebestroute.AfoggystarttothedayinruralMungyeong,NorthGyeongsang,onSept.30.[JIMBULLEY]PoweringdowntheNakdong,ImadeitpasttheindustrialhubofGumi,NorthGyeongsang,andintothetownofChilgok,whereIspentthenight.Thiswasoneofthebestafternoonsofthejourney—whilethetownofGumiitselfisasortofindustrialhellscapeoffactoriesandbigtrucks,the50kilometersorsoofbikeroadsthatitmaintainsaresomeofthemostbeautifulinthecountry.AviewdowntheNakdongRiverfromNakdanbo,awierinUiseong,NorthGyeongsang,onSept.30.[JIMBULLEY]Longflatstretchesofbeautifullylandscapedparkswiththeoccasionalwoodendeckonstiltsovertherivermeantthekilometersflewpast,andtheNepaleserestaurantinChilgokwastheperfecticingonthecakeaftera102-kilometerday.ChilgoksentmeonmywayonthemorningofDay5,Oct.1,withagoodcoffeeandabacon,lettuce,tomato,hashbrownandjam(yes,jam)sandwich.Itwasasurprisinglydry,sunnyday,withtemperaturesreaching28degreesCelsius(82degreesFahrenheit).Along,flattrailwindsaroundtheoutskirtsofDaeguonOct.1.[JIMBULLEY]Therearehotdaysonabikewhenthesunwearsyoudownandtiresyouout,andtherearedayswhenitdoestheexactopposite,buoyingyouupsomuchthatyoustarttowonderifyouhavesomesortofvestigialphotosynthesisability.Thiswasverymuchthelatter,andI’dalreadyclocked60kilometersbeforeIstoppedforlunchonthesouthernsideofDaegu.Thisareaissparselypopulated,andwith95kilometersalreadycycled,IarrivedatJeogpoJunction,acollectionofverydatedmotelsandrestaurantsinthemiddleofnowherethatofferstheonlyplacetostayona50-kilometerstretchoftheNakdong.TheonlyotheroptionistocontinueontoNamjiVillage,30kilometersandtwosteephillsfurtherdownthetrail.AviewbackdowntheNakdonggangBicyclePathfromDalseongboinDaeguonOct.1.[JIMBULLEY]I’dbeendreadingthosehillssincethestartofthetrip,andeverycyclistI’vemetthat’sdonetheridehadtoldmetheyaretheworstpart.Havinghadsuchafantastictimeinthesun,IreasonedthatifItacklethemnow,they’reunlikelytoovershadowsuchabeautifulday.Whenmakingthatdecision,Ididn’tentirelyaccountfortheencroachingdarkness.Thefirsthillisthehighestandhardest,andIstruggledupit,rewardedwithanincredibleviewoftheriverbelow.Thesecond,10kilometersdowntheroad,isanold,unusedtrackoveradenselyforestedhill.LookingdownontheNakdongRiverafterasteephillclimbonOct.1.[JIMBULLEY]DuskfellhardasIclimbedthathill,andmybikelightswerelittlehelpintheoppressivedarknessoftheforest.Stravadatashowsthatatnopointontheentiretripdidmyheartratespikehigherthanduringthatsecondclimb,asIimaginedbeinggoredtodeathbyaboarorbrutallymurderedbythedenizensoftheforest.ButIdidfinallymakeitdowntheotherside,limpingintoNamjiVillage,SouthGyeongsang,with119kilometersontheclock.StartingDay6inNamji,Iwasonly100fairlyflatkilometersawayfromthemouthoftheNakdongandtheendoftheride.Thebiggeststruggleatthisstagewasfood—betweenNamjiandBusan,the
